A new beginning

A lot has changed in my life within the last few weeks and I haven't been able to catch a breath! To start with, I received a job offer from an incredible company that I have long admired. I am completely thrilled about this opportunity and the exciting new direction my career is heading. It is a fusion of all aspects of marketing - including special events! I also am moving (this week!) and found a cozy apartment in Marin County, which is just north of San Francisco.

And of course, as Murphy's law would have it, all sorts of loose ends have popped up that need to be tightened. So for now, my entire life is packed away in boxes as I spend these days gathering my belongings from storage units scattered between Northern and Southern California. I know I have been neglecting this little virtual space as of late, but once I've moved and settled into my new routine, I will return with regular posts. For now, please enjoy the cover of a lovely journal by Papaya Art gifted to me by a dear friend.

Egg Press for Blue Sky Daily Calendar

I have a few old-school habits that I refuse to part with - no matter how far technology advances. One of them, is keeping a good old-fashioned hard-copy weekly & monthly planner. Since it will be a constant companion for the next 365 days it needs to be pretty special. I finally found "the one"! It's Egg Press Bursts Planner Diary by Blue Sky. Egg Press, a letterpress greeting card designer, temporarily teamed up with Blue Sky, a daily planner designer, to produce an exclusive designer line for Target. I was lucky enough to score one - on sale! Only select Targets carry it (and finding them on the Target website are hopeless), but I did find them on Blue Sky's website if you are in the market.

Here is a link to my own calendar - you can't tell by the photo, but it has a nice cloth cover and the "bursts" are so very cheery it makes every day feel like a celebration. I always save my calendars, because it's fun to look back a couple years to see what you were up to that day. I detail my appointments, my shopping lists, the new wine I've tried, what I ate for dinner, travel information and even who I saw that day. No matter how mundane, I always get a kick out of looking back and piecing together a simple day that ordinarily would have been forgotten. Now you can't do that if you keep it all in your phone!

Stylish Blogger Nominations and 7 random things about me

I have finally joined the land of the living again! I have had a really nasty case of the flu, that just would not go away. I finally caved and took antibiotics - which I hate to do - but it seems to have done the trick because I'm starting to feel better. Anyway, before my health collapsed I promised to pass the Stylish Blogger torch and list seven random things you don't know about me. So here goes!

Seven things you don't know about me...

1. I speak Italian. I am half Italian on my father's side. His family immigrated to California and settled in North Beach in San Francisco. Though they spoke English, my Nonna pretended to have a hearing problem unless you spoke to her in Italian. So I learned, and communication was much easier. She passed several years ago so I'm out of practice. Maybe I need another trip to Italia to brush up?

3. I am a wine enthusiast. Pinot Noir specifically. I would like to say I'm a connoisseur, but I simply just don't know enough about all the nuances of each varietal to claim to be an expert. I have dabbled in wine enough to know, that I prefer Pinot Noir for it's silky texture and it's smooth, elegant finish. I can easily walk into any grocery store's wine selection and pick out a superb Pinot because I'm quite dedicated to sampling them all! I would love to someday enroll in the Wine Studies program at UC Berkeley... and visit Burgandy, France where the magic began.

4. I am in school right now. In my other life, I'm a marketing professional and working in special events has really allowed my creativity to flourish in a new direction. I love every aspect of marketing and consider myself lucky to have found a career path that thrills and excites me. I am currently finishing the UC Irvine Certificate in Web 2.0 and Social Media.

5. I am an outdoors-woman who hates to camp. I know that doesn't sound like I'm a true outdoors-woman, but hear me out. I love to be outside - the seasons, the sun, the ocean, the mountains and most especially trees. I can identify almost every species of vegetation (in California at least). My best friend's family owns a flower shop in SF so she has taught me everything about flowers too. I love to hike, bike, kayak, swim, picnic and just be outside. Once the sun goes down, I'll readily finish the day with a bonfire. But then I want to return to a warm, comfortable bed with a high thread count, electricity and a hot shower - no exceptions!

6. I am a law-of-attraction junkie. I devour any and every book I can find on deliberate intention and fulfilling your dreams by creating your own reality. My collection includes books by Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay, Deepak Chopra, JohnAssaraf, Laura Day, Ernest Holmes and of course, The Secret by Rhonda Byrnes.

7. I am an ordained minister. Flutter Events has a few very ZEN go-to non-denominational ministers for the elopement ceremonies, but I am also qualified to marry folks in the state of California. I have studied and can conduct many unorthodox ceremonies including Buddhist, Native American and Wiccan - all of which are incredibly romantic!

1. Erin at Dandelion and Grey. Erin was my very first blogging friend. She is a big shot in the blogosphere, but still always found the time to encourage and cheer me on. Her lovely blog is an incredibly beautiful and inspiring place to escape and forget your cares. Not only is she a talented blogger, but she is also an incredibly creative events stylist and a genuinely sweet and caring person.

2. Lili at Tigers to Lilies. Lili has a dreamy, ethereal blog infused with a witty sense of humor that shines through in her posts. Lili loves flowers and so do I, so I often drop by to see what is new in the floral arena. She makes her own arrangements that look as though they were all freshly picked from a field of wildflowers.

3. Victoria from A Subtle Reverie, the blog formerly known as City Cradle, is an event stylist and master do-it-yourselfer. There are so many inspiring projects on her blog it would take weeks to go through them all, let alone give one a go. But, if you head over there and take a look around you will see tons of lovely projects you'll be itching to try yourself. Warning: Victoria will make you really, really want to throw a party!

4. Lovely Little Things is a recent discovery for me but once I found this inspiring blog I devoured bunches of posts in one sitting. LLT is a self-proclaimed Cat Lover For Life, a bride-to-be and book worm - three of my favorite things!

Inspired home: Schuyler Samperton

It's no secret that I dearly miss Domino Magazine, which to this day I still find a source of constant design inspiration. One of my most beloved (now dog-eared and tattered) issues features Schuyler Samperton, an interior designer based in Los Angeles. Domino Magazine may be gone, but Sampterton is still going strong. Here are samples of designs from Samperton's website.

Samperton's design aesthetic leans toward bohemian, with vibrant pops of color, varying textures and patterns, and fresh fauna and flora taking center stage. I love how she combines traditional pieces with exotic accents like Moroccan lanterns, bamboo and antique Persian rugs. Every room in her portfolio includes thoughtfully arranged personal treasures that all seem to carry a history with its own story to tell.

Flutter's Earth-friendly Espresso Cart Event

Flutter Events has expanded its services to include European espresso cart events. We helped DR Horton host a "green" espresso cart event for the Lantana model grand opening on Saturday. Our event was 90 percent green (I say 90 percent because the post-consumer recycled cups we ordered did not arrive on time).

We used gourmet shade-grown beans from San Francisco Bay Certified Organic Rainforest Blend. The company works with the farmers to supply health care, housing, meal programs, and education to the workers and their families. The coffee is produced 100 percent naturally, with no chemicals or pesticides. Nature-friendly farming practices tend to mature coffee more slowly so the flavors develop more fully before harvest. We have sampled quite a few coffees far and wide, and we think this one is truly superior in taste and quality.

The cups as I mentioned previously did not come on time, but I believe it to be a stroke of luck since it lead me to discover ecopackstore.com which supplies hot beverage cups made of sugar cane fibers. The cups are biodegradable and compost within 45 -60 days. The company is based in San Diego, and the folks there were so helpful they even offered to drive the cups to Del Mar to meet me the night before the event! The timing wasn't right, but now we will be using their fabulous products moving forward. I highly recommend Eco Pack Store for any green gathering.

The plates and napkins were also green products - the compostable plates were also made from sugar-cane fibers and the napkins were from recycled paper. We supplied devastatingly delicious pastries from a French bakery to lend the event an authentic European experience. We used a three-tier bamboo pastry tray for the presentation (you can learn more about the ecological benefits of bamboo in a former blog post here).

We are currently working on nailing down a composting system so that the grinds (and cups) can be returned to the Earth for future vegetable gardens.

Winter getaway... or alpine elopement idea

It's been a while since I've embarked on one of my beloved road trip and the open road is calling me again... I've taken the liberty of planning the perfect romantic winter getaway, which if you are in the market, could be a lovely elopement idea. The destination: South Lake Tahoe. I grew up vacationing in Tahoe with my family, and skiing and snowboarding aside, there is a multitude of exciting things to do in the winter.

Day 1: Stay in a cozy log cabin at Sorensen's, a picture-perfect resort in Hope, CA, just 15 minutes outside Kirkwood resort. www.sorensensresort.com

Borrow a pair of free snow shoes Sorensen's provides to guests and explore your winter wonderland.

After a vigorous hike in the surrounding woodlands, settle inn (pun intended) to a quiet dinner at Sorensen's country kitchen. It appears they have a nice wine selection.

Day 2: After warming your insides with a hot cup of Joe and hearty breakfast, head out to Heavenly for an exhilarating run on the longest zip line tour in the US! Photos don't do this experience justice so here is a youtube video. Danger zone - radical!

Once you have sufficiently spiked your adrenaline, decompress at Borges Sleigh Rides. Snuggle under some blankets and take a sunset dinner sleigh ride straight out of a Dicken's novel. The full-course dinner selections range from chicken primavera to scampi and include cheese fondu and a twice baked potato. Smuggle your own wine if you have a spare canteen.

And just for kicks, I thought I would share these photos I nabbed from Sorensen's website of their lovely woodland wedding gazebo. With the surrounding aspens and pines, it must be absolutely gorgeous covered in a blanket of snow. Perfect for a candlelit elopement ceremony at dusk.

Book review: Driving sideways

I just finished Driving Sideways by Jess Riley and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for an entertaining and hilarious diversion. I rarely laugh out loud when reading, and this book had me in stitches from start to finish.

The synopsis: 28 year-old Leigh embarks on a road trip after a kidney transplant gives her a new lease on life. She picks up a 17 year old hitch hiker along the way, and share many misadventures as they make their way from Wisconsin to California.

I am a quote junkie, and find it the best way to remember the books I read so here are a few of my favorite exerts from Driving Sideways:

Thoughts on her new kidney:

"After my surgery, I began having strange cravings for food I'd never tasted before. Gazpacho. Falafel with cold cucumber salad. Candied ginger. Once I found myself standing in the Copps checkout line at two a.m. dropping five bags of frozen edamame on the conveyer belt. Five bags! I'm sure the checker thought I was completely stoned. In addition to my new food cravings, I also completely lost interest in the music that had propelled me through three years of college. Dido? Barftastic! Third Eye Blind? Shittacular! At first I chalked it up to a simple change in tastes. This happened to everyone didn't it? I mean, we all used to have mall hair and jelly pumps, but then we developed common sense, right? One night, I found myself in line at the Exclusive Company holding CDs by Elbow, Nick Drake and Wilco. I'd never heard of these people - or heard any of their songs - but I knew I'd love them. And I did. A new soundtrack for the new me. "

(I think shittacular is my new favorite word. I apologize in advance if I offend, but I love it so!)

Hitch hiker apprehensions :

"Denise shrugs and pulls out a battered copy of The Catcher in the Rye. "Mind if I read?" she asks. I'm too surprised to do anything but nod. I'd expected her to lug out a Danielle Steel novel or maybe Thievery digest. I'm a little unnerved by her choice in reading material. Doesn't a red flag pop up in an FBI computer somewhere whenever someone checks Catcher out of a library? Because didn't Mark David Chapman and Lee Harvey Oswald enjoy the novel? I tell myself I won't worry until Denise starts referring to herself with three names."

Wistfully watching her friends drinking wine:

"I haven't tasted a drop of alcohol in nearly seven years. And I'd be a dirty, stinking liar if I said I didn't miss it - the fuzzy warmth of the first drink, the jubilation and easy conversation of the second, the coy, nonsensical flirtation of the third. (I'll stop there, before the inappropriate and obnoxious comments of the fourth, nudity of the fifth and vomiting of the sixth)."

(LOL)

Describing her best friend:

"Her name was Jillian Wallace, and she had not only a pool and a spiral perm, but six rowdy brothers and sisters, one of whom owned a Ford Mustang and a bootleg Nirvana tape before we even knew who Kurt Cobain was. Another had an expensive, aromatic suade jacket and was on the high school dance squad. They threw crowded, destructive parties when Jillian's parents were out of town, with cassette-tape streamers on the ceiling fans and mattresses thrown from upstairs windows. Just like on TV! They were like Gods to me."

(Ah, the '90s!)

"But come on, your best friend - who wept at your grandmother's funeral, finishes your sentences, and warns you when you've got spinach stuck between your teeth: your confessor, therapist, partner in crime, and sounding board all rolled into one amazing person - announces she's moving four states away as you're blindsided by a medical tsunami and you don't feel even a smidgen of loss, self-pity, or envy?"

Balance your carbon footprint - plant a tree!

I am now including the planting of a tree in a couple's name to the Flutter elopement package. I think trees are a perfect symbol of growth, hope and love - the foundation of any marriage of the heart. The couple will receive a certificate with their names detailing where the tree was planted.

Not only are trees a beautiful gift to honor the celebration of a marriage, but there are countless benefits to reforestation. Trees filter carbon dioxide which help reduce the buildup of greenhouse gases and air pollutants. Trees are a necessity for the restoration of natural ecosystems which help recharge ground water and sustain stream flow, provide habitat for wildlife, and of course, give us beautiful places to enjoy recreational activities.

The American Forest website has a handy little carbon-footprint calculator here. According to mine, I need to plant 42 trees this year to balance my carbon footprint - and I'm an avid recycler! There are plenty of other resources to plant trees in the United States including the National Arbor Day Foundation or Treesinstead.com. For $15, the American Forest will also "plant a tree in remembrance" which I think is a really poignant way to honor the memory of a loved one.

In the spirt of a fresh start for 2011, I have decided I need to get rid of some of the HUNDREDS of my favorite inspiring discoveries from the blogging world that are stashed on my desktop. It has become impossible to find anything and sometimes when clicking on an older post, tragically the link has expired and that bit of inspiration is lost forever. So I am going to be transferring a lot of my favorites posts/ideas/pretty photos to this blog to make room for the new on my laptop!

Healthy Beauty: The Kind Diet

My dear friend Megan successfully took the Vegan plunge about a year ago, and gave me a copy of her inspiration "The Kind Diet" by Alicia Silverstone. Megan has the most amazing body (to be fair she was always slim) but since her diet change, her body is even trimmer and her energy level is off the charts!

As a fellow "greenie" and animal lover, I have always admired Alicia Silverstone who has long been recognized as a committed environmentalist and animal rights activist. Her book is an easy approach to eating healthfully with both the planet, and it's creatures, in mind. Alicia designed three different diet plans to choose from. One plan is called "Flirting", and it's simply getting your feet wet by eliminating unhealthy habits, "Vegan" is a plant-based diet, and "Superhero" which means totally eliminating all dairy and animal products.

I have never been much of a meat eater - it just never felt natural to me - even as a kid. When I was a freshmen in college, I took an animal science class instead of biology. My project for the semester was to raise a steer. I formed a bond with my sweet baby cow who became quite tame by semester end when he was slated to be put to slaughter. I put up such a huge fuss at the university farm he remained a bull (if you know what I mean) and was not subjected to the same fate at the slaughter house as the other calves. Even though my calf survived, the others didn't, and I haven't been able to eat beef or much of any meat since. Now, if I hold up a chicken wing I get queazy thinking about where it came from. I still eat some fish, but once you interact with a farm animal, you come to find they have personalities and feelings just like your cat or dog.

I am not suggesting becoming a vegatarian is the right path for everyone. For one, I personally cannot give up dairy. I am a cheese-a-holic and totally unwilling to part with my love of anything and everything cheese. However, the idea of giving up refined white sugar and flour, and processed food loaded with preservatives, is probably a good one. I intend to follow many of Alicia's recommendations by implementing brown rice into my diet on a regular basis, substituting white bread with organic whole grain bread (cracked wheat sourdough is a fave I share with Alicia!) and move from white sugar to maple syrup and brown rice syrup, before taking the Vegan plunge.

I also like her recommendation of packing healthy snacks while traveling because that is when I tend to slip. I frequently drive between Orange County and San Francisco. When I am hungry, tired and just logged six hours on the road with two more to go, I always end up stopping at a gas station and walking out with Doritos and a Mountain Dew to "recharge my battery". Gross, I know. Alicia's alternative is packing fruit, instant miso soup, instant oatmeal, a bag of Cure-all tea and a thermos of hot water. She also recommends ramen-type noodles but I don't know where to find the healthy version of those...

Instead of beckoning 2011 with new year resolutions I am making 2011 wishes. Wishes are powerful means to transform your dreams and desires into intentions. I think it is important to take the time to honor life's passages with a ritual. For example, a wedding is a ritual in which two separate beings vow to come together as one to love and honor each other. A birthday party is a ritual to celebrate the day you were born. So why not make a ritual to usher positive changes into the new year? I am going to make three wishes because it is a manageable number and I believe it is a powerful number in the human psyche (the story of the genie granting three wishes, Goldilocks and the THREE bears, Past, Present and Future etc.) Recently a friend of mine shared with me a fun and simple ritual for making wishes. Here is what she told me to do:

Take a moment to think about your hearts deepest desires
Write them down on a piece of paper
Light a candle
Read your wishes out loud.
Plant a seed for each wish. Literally, take three seeds, three pots and plant a seed in each pot to represent the wish you've made. You could even label each pot "new job" or "true love" or whatever it is you are wishing for.
Give thanks to the Universe or God or whoever it is you pray to, for granting these wishes that you KNOW are on their way to you now.
Blow out the candle.
Watch your seedlings grow and your wishes come true!

Technical difficulties

If you follow astrology at all, then you know what Mercury retrograde means. Astrologers believe this configuration brings miscommunications, delays and problems with electronics. And that pretty sums up the last week for me. I have been having a lot of difficulty with my computer, my internet connection and my blog posts within Blogger. It took me two hours to load the images for my last post! I want to apologize for the lapse in posts - I am really hoping once Mercury goes out of retrograde (December 30th) we'll be back in business.

My favorite feature this month is a perfect eco-minded DIY celebration of the holiday season. Instead of the wasteful tradition of cutting down a tree this holiday, follow Pure Green's cue by using a potted living tree. I have recently taken up knitting which is something I've always wanted to learn. Knitting keeps me occupied whenever I'm idle and is relaxing and highly addictive. I have three projects underway which are all scarves using the basic knit stitch method. I wanted to master this stitch before I learned a new technique. It's been really fun to see my knitting improve as I go. My first scarf (the white one below) is full of holes, but the latest one I have been able to actually knit without looking at my stitches. Once I finish all three I'm going to post photos and then onto learning the purl stitch!

Not only is knitting a huge stress reliever, but it also is a powerful brain booster. Knitting engages both the left and right side of the brain. I read an article by a chief scientic officer of Neuroscience solutions who said "At around 30, our memory and congnitive and motor abilities begin to decline, but anytime you learn a new skill, you change the brain physically."

Samhain, a Celtic holiday celebrated centuries before Christianity eradicated the Pagan religions, is the orgin of what is now called Halloween. It is the last harvest festival of the year and a night when it's said the veil between the worlds is thin. It is a night to honor our ancestors and the soul of the departed, and historically was celebrated with bonfires and jack-o-lanterns to light the darkness for any wandering spirits. Leave an apple outside and light a candle in the window to guide spirits on their journey. raise a glass to those who have moved on between veils and drink to their life, and meeting them again in the next cycle of life.

As Halloween draws near, I'm scrambling to pull together all the pieces of my costume. I hardly ever opt for a "scary" costume because all the makeup, faux blood and gore tend to get uncomfortable after an hour. I have always admired the "Rockabilly" look inspired by the pin-up girls of the '30s and '40s. Here are some photos that I am using as inspiration for my "pin-up" girl costume. After all, I think the best part of Halloween is being someone else for just one night...

Lifelong Cinderella: The perfect Fall ensemble

I often play a game called the perfect outfit. Since I was a young girl, I've always liked to thumb through magazines and find the one perfect ensemble that I would wear as my uniform. The only requirements: every piece must be both beautiful and comfortable. It changes all the time, but right now this graceful ensemble featured in a photo shoot by Steep Street would be it.

The elements: a long flowy dress, a luxurious cardigan, hopelessly chic brown boots and a snuggly knit beanie. Yes, I know that dress looks a lot like a wedding dress... and here is where my Lifelong Cinderella comes in. I believe it is very chic to wear a long dress outside of the confines of a wedding - the maxi dress is living proof! Whether you dress it up or dress it down, a dress with fluid lines can be a very feminine or bohemian look. In this instance, the cardigan and the boots toughen it up so it isn't too sweet. Perfection!

Hitwise Intelligence - Heather Dougherty - North America:

New data from the US Census Bureau cites that the percentage of young adults (ages 25 to 34) who have never married has been on a steady rise over the past decade, from 35% in 2000 to 44% in 2008. The same number increased again in 2009 to 46%, passing up the percentage of married young adults at 45% for the first time. While there may be a lot of various factors leading to this shift, one possible driver is the poor economy coupled with the high cost of weddings. We also see this same trend around age within our data at Hitwise, where the share of visits to the Weddings category from visitors between the ages of 25 to 34 declined to 21% for the 4 weeks ending September 25, 2010 from 26% on year ago. Interestingly, the age group that increased the most during the same time frame was 18-24, rather than from visitors over 35 that may be marrying later.

Dr. Andrew Weil is one of my heros, whose health philosophy is best summarized by the following quote:

His book Eight Weeks to Optimum Health is my bible, and adheres to healthy habits including these highlights:

1. Buying fresh flowers for your home and work space every week

2. Walking outdoors for 45 minutes a day

3. Using virgin olive oil instead of cooking oil

4. Drinking green tea religiously

5. Eliminating processed foods and fast food from diet, and replacing with fresh food, herbs for flavor, butter instead of margarine and lots of beans and sweet potatoes for protein

6. Red wine and cheese are okay daily in small portions (YAY!! This one is my favorite)

7. Avoiding negative influences including horror movies and the news (However, this is no excuse not to vote it is a national responsibility to keep our politicians honest)

8. Avoid white flour and eat more grains such as brown rice and bulgar wheat

9. Eat foods rich in Omega 3s and antioxidants such as salmon and broccoli every week

10. Avoid polluted air or at least minimize exposure by having a home air filter

I highly recommend picking up his book below for more information.

I recently dined at his new restaurant in Newport Beach, which is a certified green restaurant. The dishes we sampled included Chicken Panang Curry, Organic Ricotta Lasagna, Halibut Tacos and Lemon Olive Oil Cake, all of which were healthy and guilt-free

This summer brought me the rare freedom to travel and explore my lovely home state of California. The economy is challenging for everyone, and travel can be expensive. But if you embrace the power of the roadtrip, it's truly amazing to discover so many beautiful and inspiring places close to home. Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Napa, Murphy, Lodi, San Francisco and Venice Beach are just some of the places I've had the good fortune to explore in the last few months. I took a break from blogging to seize the opportunity for adventure, reorganize Flutter and reevaluate life itself. Eco-lifestyle: Vertical gardens

Vertical gardens are all the rage these days in the modern sustainability circles. A vertical garden is the perfect solution for apartment dwellers who don't have a little plot of land to toil or a rooftop to transform into Eden.

The benefits includes reducing noise, cooling a building, filtering and oxygenating the air and of course, producing delicious organic food. Vertical gardens can consist of herbs, vegetables, ferns or whatever you fancy. I found the best pictures of succulent vertical gardens so I think if I were to tackle this project, I would go the succulent route first.

I found instructions here.

1. Build a frame with a 2'' depth and cover with wire mesh. Or buy one at Succulent gardens

2. Place soil over screen and run your fingers over the screen and soil to move through screen. Make sure there is very little air space between soil and screen.

3. Snip some cuttings from mature plants. Make sure the stems are 1/4 inch in length or smaller. The cuttings will need to heal and form a scab for about one week before planting. Store cuttings in a cool shaded area before planting.

4. Poke the cuttings’ stem ends through the mesh and into the soil. Leave the frame lying flat in a cool, bright location while plants take root, about 7 to 10 days after planting, then begin watering.

Once plants are securely rooted―this takes between 4 and 12 weeks―display the frames upright in an area that gets morning or filtered sun.

Water as soil approaches dryness, about every 7 to 10 days. To water, remove frame from the wall, lay flat, water lightly, and let soil drain before hanging up again.

Inspired travel: Mini vacation

Though I am a hiker, biker and nature lover, I am not a camper. After a long day traversing the outdoors I like to enjoy a comfortable bed and a warm shower. But, after seeing this adorable "camper" I think I could change my mind.

The back opens up to a slick little kitchen - complete with a collapsable table.

We all know we need our antioxidants and Omega 3s because they fight cancer and slow the process of aging - to name just a few benefits. But, we all didn't know that you could take your daily dose in just two quick, yummy tablespoons. Flaxseed meal is an incredibly simple way to add these nutrients to your diet. You can add it to cereal, pancakes or waffles.

Here are some fun facts about flaxseed meal. Remember, we are talking about two tablespoons. It delivers as much fiber as 1 1/2 cups of cooked oatmeal. You have to eat 30 cups of broccoli to get the same amount of lignans (a natural antioxidant). One serving of flaxseed meal contains 2400 milligrams of Omega-3.

I use Dr. Bob's Red Mill Whole Ground Flaxseed meal which I buy at Trader Joe's. But you can also find it at Amazon. Next week I'm going to share my secret trick for adding it to my daily diet - without having to bake!

Eco-lifestyle: Bamboo drinking straws

There is a mass of plastic floating in the Pacific Ocean twice the size of Texas. Read more here. The ramifications to this are staggering. Not only does it kill wildlife who get caught in the tangle, marine wildlife is consuming the particles of plastic which obviously makes it's way into our food. The need for alternatives to plastic are obvious and require immediate action. There are a multitude of new products emerging every day. Bamboo drinking straws is one such product that caught my eye. It is a small change we can all make is replace the use of plastic drinking straws.

These lovely bamboo alternatives are not only cool but biodegradable and last much longer then their plastic step-sibling. For more about bamboo read my post about bamboo here.

Elopements

I was so happy to discover two different blog posts on elopements this week. Elopements are something very dear to my heart. I have created a business based on elopements because I passionately believe in them. As much as having the big day with a hundred of your friends and family is exciting, fun, spectacular and sometimes just plain necessary, I think there is a sweetness and magic to sharing the epic moment that you commit to each other privately. An elopement allows a couple to celebrate their love without distraction. The hopeless romantic within me likes the idea of "running away together". I imagine spontaneously whisking off into the night like a couple of crazy teenagers - with nothing but a suitcase, a tie and a white dress. It is so meaningful and intimate. And so very attainable. It's embodies everything love should be - simple, pure and genuine.

This adorable couple held a civil ceremony in Boston and had a photographer follow them around for the day. The elopement was featured on Forget-Me-Not weddings and you can check out more photos and details here.

I recently watched the Movie “Million Dollar Mermaid” which featured the fabulous Esther Williams swimming in a deliciously sparkly tiara. I sighed and said “I would love to go swimming in a tiara”.

My S.O. didn’t miss a beat and responded “you would love to do everything in a tiara”. I was about to whack him in the arm when I thought about it and said, “It's true, I would like to do everything in a tiara.”

And why shouldn’t I? Why shouldn’t you? Like Esther Williams, if you are tiara worthy, you are not just tiara worthy on your wedding day or if you have a royal bloodline. I am inspired by the iPhone. I am enamored with the convenience of having every tool I need at my fingertips. I used to carry a cell phone, iPod and a camera. Before I switched cell phone carriers, I had them all in one sweet little package - not to mention all the applications I never knew I couldn't live without. What does the iPhone have to do with trailers?

Pre-fabricated modular housing reminds me of the iPhone concept. The former "trailer" market has transformed into a streamlined green building art form. Inspired place: Green Acres Lavender Farm

I have returned from my travels in Northern California. I had a lovely time visiting with family and old friends in my little city by the bay. On the way home, my S.O. and I stopped at the Green Acres Lavender Farm in Atascadero which I've always wanted to visit. It was breathtaking. The second we stepped out of the car the sweet scent of lavender immediately permeated the senses.

We met the owners who are warm and incredibly knowledgeable on the topic of all things lavender. Sadly, the farm is up for sale as life has taken the owners on a new adventure. The property would make for an incredible bed and breakfast so if you know anyone in the market... There is also some resident cats who will need new homes all of which were really sweet, friendly, beautiful kitties. I've already got dibs on Sir Felix of Lavender who I have fallen madly in love with.

The lavender isn't in bloom until July, so I am aching to go back during their 5th annual lavender festival July 10th. Maybe I'll see you there!

I live in Dana Point, California. We had a gray whale in our harbor this week. We went down to catch a glimpse and were surprised to find news crews, sheriffs, helicopters and excited masses of people. We walked out on the crowded jetty and saw her - a real, live, whale, up close. It was completely awe inspiring to be able to see such a majestic creature just feet away. Locals named her Lily and while we were on that jetty we got the whole story.

At first, it was speculated that she was an old whale and had come to the harbor to beach herself. But as it turns out, Lily was actually quite young and a damsel in distress. Gray whales migrate from Baja to Alaska each year. Lily was caught in a fishing net and the weight of 150 pounds of fishing net tangled in her tail and fins was making it too difficult for her to continue her migration. Whales are social creatures, and she must have been in a pod that left her behind. The folks at Sea World came to her rescue and she remained docile and still as can be, for four hours while they cut the fishing net off her. We, humans, put her into peril, yet she still trusted us enough to let us come inches away - even with the roar of the helicopters and the slew of boats surrounding her.

And once they cut her free we all rejoiced for our self-appointed hometown hero. She picked our harbor as her haven and so many of us were honored to be a part of her story. Lily died today. I am not sure how, because I'm too heartbroken to hear anything about the gentle soul whose story was sure to be a happy ending . She touched the hearts of so many - none of us the same - yet all of us bound together, inspired by her courage. We, the human race, have to do better for our wildlife. A whale shouldn't suffer because we were careless with a fishing net, and an entire eco-system shouldn't die from an oil spill. The Earth's creatures should all be treated with honor, compassion and responsibility. And I'm proud to say I saw people from all walks of life do just that by rallying around a whale named Lily.

If you want to support whale conservation, please send this message to president Obama urging him to stop plans to legalize commercial whaling. Do it for Lily.

My S.O. and I have been enamored with the surreal, dreamy imperfection of Holga photography and finally bought a Holga 135BC camera. We have gone on FOUR "photo shoots" and have not produced a single photo yet. After the first three rolls of film were totally botched, we watched a bunch of Youtube instructional videos before our next excursion. We finally felt prepared, so we went to the mission in San Juan Capistrano and took some very magical pictures of sun-dappled gardens, fountains and crumbling architecture. Healthy lifestyle: Cinnamon

I am a firm believer that when you have a persistent craving for something, it's your body telling you that there is missing nutrient or imbalance in the body. I have been craving cinnamon like crazy these days. I've been gorging on cinnamon toast and Chai tea, and now I'm even been brewing my coffee grinds with cinnamon.

I decided to research the benefits of cinnamon to see what my body is lacking, and was astounded by how many health benefits are in this powerful little spice.

- Cinnamon has anti-flammatory properties that can counteract the effect of eating fried, fatty and processed foods

- Cinnamon has antifungal and antibacterial properties,

- Cinnamon helps those with Type 2 diabetes control blood sugar levels

- Cinnamon lowers cholesterol

- Cinnamon is a source of manganese, dietary fiber, iron and calcium

I guess my body is trying to tell me to eat better... a little less fatty and processed foods. More about that another time... for now, I'm going to go have me some cinnamon!

I attended a friend's baby shower this weekend honoring the upcoming arrival of a baby girl. It was a cheery, pink and chocolate affair where guests were served with disposable pink paper plates and plastic cups. Once lunch was finished, and guests started tossing their table settings, I put out a separate can for recycling beside the trash. Nobody seemed to catch the difference, so I set up camp taking plates and cups to put in the recycling bin. However, my efforts were thwarted by one of the grandma-to-bes who said "I shouldn't worry about it" and took my little recycling attempt and threw it in the garbage. I was completed deflated. It seemed like such a pointless waste of natural resources (virgin trees which take 25 years to grow) for a party that lasted just a few hours.

Which got me to thinking how for many people recycling is now accepted as a part of daily life, yet large events, which produce enormous amounts of landfill waste, still get overlooked. I have discovered some sustainable solutions for those occasions where disposable products are absolutely necessary (and let's face it - sometimes they are).

These biodegradable (and compostable) plates from The Green Office are made from sugar cane fiber, the waste that is usually tossed after the sugar is extracted. And for only $7.50 for 125 plates it is an incredible steal!

I'm inspired by this Stockholm apartment I found on digs digs. It is open and airy and completely organized - which is a project I'm tackling in my own home.

Though such minimalist decor is completely unrealistic in my home due to animals, books, a home office, sentimental trinkets and an assortment of accessories to support all my hobbies, I will be sharing my adventures in cutting through the clutter.

My parents installed an air filtration system into their home and I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. Then I unknowingly moved to a pollen ridden dust bowl and developed allergies which incapacitated me. Suddenly, my parent's home became a welcome haven. Pollen season returned in full swing, and all hopped up on Benadryl I started shopping for air filters. I am pretty sure I found the coolest air filter ever invented.

Andrea Air Filter blends art and science to clean and oxygenate homes using living plants, soil and water. The leaves of the plant draws polluted air from the environment and absorbs it, naturally metabolizing it through the plant system. This system eliminates harmful gases beyond simply collecting it on a filter surface. Andrea is causing quite a stir in the scientific community for this achievement. I'm sure it will eventually hit the main stream, and once it does, I hope that people truly come to understand how much we depend on plants to purify the air we breathe, and in essence, survive. No need to wait for a beach wedding in Cabo to sport a Mexican wedding dress. A Sunday brunch or early summer BBQ would be the perfect occasion to wear this gauzy sundress. I just discovered the loveliest shop on Etsy. I am enamored with these chic pieces by Aida Coronado and love the way she pulled these ethereal looks together.

The look is relatively simple - just a bold accessory or two.

And a flower in the hair is a romantic finishing touch.

I read a magazine article about the ageless supermodel Claudia Schiffer who shared some of her beauty secrets. She drinks Peppermint Tea religiously and raves about the benefits.

Peppermint tea is said to aid the digestive track, reduce heartburn and ease both stress and muscle aches. Claudia claims peppermint tea is beneficial for the skin but I was unable to find evidence of that - yet.

I gave peppermint tea a test drive and absolutely loved it. I now have a little ritual of drinking two cups with honey before bedtime. It truly calms me, soothes my stomach and I like to imagine it is making my skin just as luminous as Claudia's.

I have always had a bit of a guilt complex associated with greeting cards. I hate to waste the lives of trees for such a fleeting function as a wrapped gift or a happy birthday wish. I tried a no-gift-wrap, no-cards policy with friends and family. Yet, when I receive a card from a loved one – I keep it forever (my significant other refers to this habit as hoarding). Even though wasting paper goes against my beliefs, I feel that I’m depriving my beloved gift recipients of a small pleasure.

The solution: Botanical Paperworks, the creator of plantable greeting cards, journals and other printed paper products.

Healthy Beauty: Standing Ab Exercises

I want a strong core and taut tummy but hate sit-ups and any floor exercises outside of attending Yoga. I have been looking for something simple to add to my regime that I would be motivated to stick with and perform just about anywhere. I found the perfect solution in this quick workout. I haven't been at it long enough to see results yet, but my body feels the workout the next day which is a good sign. These are especially effective as it also incorporates a balance challenge which will strengthen the entire body. This clip calls for 8 reps on each side but I've increased it to 15 reps and the article recommends performing the workout 3-5 times per week for six weeks to see results. Bikini season is fast approaching - the pressure is on!

Eco-lifestyle: Ethanol fireplace

Before I found my condo, I created a list of all the must-haves for my ideal home: 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sunny outside patio, walk-in closet, inside laundry room and a fireplace. I eventually found everything my heart desired in one sweet 900 square ft. package except the fireplace. I figured I was choosing location (I live at the beach) over self-indulgent luxuries. But as it turns out, I now can finally complete my list with this hopelessly chic wall mounted ”Cupola” biofuel fireplace byVauni. Bio-fuel only releases small amount of water vapor and carbon dioxide which make it clean burning. And since ethanol is a more renewable resource than wood, biofuel provides a remedy to deforestation.

There are also floor models on the Vauni website which are a significantly less expensive, but being a pet owner, I have to keep flames off the floor. The company is based in Sweden so I did find another trusted resource with a similar product that may be easier for those of us living stateside. My beloved Target is offering lovely and quite reasonably priced gel fuel fireplaces - from a free-standing fireplace complete with a mantle to a sleek wall mount. Gel fuel burns clean and evaporates much like ethanol so it is also environmentally sound. I could just imagine myself curling up in a plush armchair with a good book, a cup of tea and the warm glow of one of these little biofuel beauties.

Lifelong Cinderella

I have a hunch, that one of the many reasons so many of us girly-girls have been planning our wedding since we were five, is the final realization of our dream of being a fairytale princess. The exchange of lifelong vows to our soul mate completely aside, for one lovely day we get to wear a gorgeous dress and pay glorious tribute to our jewelry, hair and shoes.

But after that one day, most of us don’t really give our inner princess much attention again. And that is a crime. Being Cindarella shouldn’t just be something celebrated once in your lifetime, but a part of ourselves to be revered and honored on a regular basis. I have made it my duty to find little ways to bring enchanting bridal traditions - both new and old - to make daily life a little more special. You shouldn't have to wait until you are a bride to celebrate the feminine mystique or let that homage become only a memory once your wedding day has passed. So now, without much further adieu, I'm going to take my spectacular wedding-worthy scarlet pumps to lunch. Lunch just got a little more special, don't you think?

A dear friend of mine is a massage therapist. She has a wealth of knowledge of natural healing remedies. Almond oil is one of the fountain-of-youth secrets that she has revealed to me. Intrigued, I researched the benefits and was astounded by my discoveries. Moisturizes and rejuvenates skin; improves elasticity; smoothes complexion & retains glow; delays aging - okay sign me up! So with much searching, I found this amazing lotion by L'Occitane called Almond Delightful Shape.

Not only do you get all the benefits of almond oil described above, but it also promises to diminish the appearance of cellulite. If that hasn't sold you, it contains immortelle which is a mysterious little flower from the island of Corsica which is said to reduce the signs of aging. Sound promising, but even if it doesn't keep all it's promises, L'Occitane is an amazing French brand and its luxurious products will always make you feel like a princess.

It would only be appropriate to dedicate my first Eco-lifestyle post to bamboo. Bamboo is nature's overachiever. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet and can be a biodegradable substitute for a multitude of products including building material, paper, linens and clothing. It takes only 3 – 5 years for a bamboo plant to reach maturity to where it can be harvested.

In contrast, it takes the average tree from 20 – 25 years to be ready for harvest. Bamboo can be harvested without disrupting the root system so it doesn't require replanting as trees do. Using bamboo helps to sustain our planet's resources as a responsible alternative to deforestation. Bamboo is considered lucky in Feng Shui and is said to have a peaceful and soothing energy which I'm hoping will infuse into the pages of this blog!
